Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 5 c
  • salt - 1/3 c
  • cider vinegar - 3 c
  • cloves garlic - 3 item
  • celery seed
  • medium cucumbers - 4 qt
  • mustard seed - 2 Tbsp
  • green peppers - 2 item
  • large white onions - 3 item

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Slice cucumbers and onions. Chop peppers. Add garlic and salt. Cover with cracked ice. Let stand 3 hours. Drain well.

Combine sugar, vinegar, celery seed and mustard seed. Pour over cucumber mixture. Heat to boiling point. Seal in hot sterilized jars. Makes 8 pints.
