Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1/2 c
  • vinegar - 5 c
  • ground cloves - 1/2 tsp
  • mustard - 2 tsp
  • celery seed - 2 tsp
  • bell pepper - 1 item
  • turmeric - 1/2 tsp
  • onions - 1 item
  • sliced cucumbers - 1 gal
  • Mix well with salt and cover with ice for 3 hours

How to make bread and butter pickles:

Add onions and bell peppers to cucumbers. Mix well with salt and cover with ice for 3 hours. Drain water and ice (wash off salt if too salty).Syrup:5 c. sugar5 c. vinegar1/2 tsp. turmeric1/2 tsp. ground cloves2 tsp. mustard2 tsp. celery seed Bring to a boil. Add cucumbers. Scald but do not boil. Put in jars. Makes 6 pints.
