  • sugar - 1 Tbsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 5 c
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • baking powder - 3 tsp
  • shortening - 3/4 c
  • warm water - 1/2 c
  • yeast - 1 pkg
  • buttermilk room temperature - 2 c

How to make angel biscuits:

Put yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup water. When yeast has dissolved, add to buttermilk and soda.

Meanwhile, sift flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender as for pie crust. Add liquid mix.

Stir together. Turn out on floured board and knead a few times. Roll out, cut and place on greased pan. Let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. Bake at 400° until browned, about 25 minutes. Dough can be stored in plastic in refrigerator until you are ready to use.
