Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1 Tbsp
- butter or margarine - 1 Tbsp
- salt - 1 tsp
- cold water - 2 c
- clove garlic, minced - 1 item
- chili powder - 2 3
- chopped onions - 1 c
- can whole kernel corn, drained - 1 oz
- chopped green pepper - 1 c
- dash of pepper - 1 item
- ground beef - 1 lb
- cans tomato sauce - 2 oz
- yellow cornmeal - 3/4 c
- pitted ripe olives, chopped - 1/2 c
- American cheese, shred - 6 oz
How to make tamale pie:
Cook meat, onion and green pepper in a large skillet until meat is lightly browned and vegetables are tender. Stir in tomato sauce, corn, olives, garlic, sugar, 1 teaspoon salt and chili powder. Simmer 20 to 25 minutes or until thick. Add cheese; stir until melted. Turn into greased 9 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish. Make cornmeal topper. Stir cornmeal and 1/2 teaspoon salt into cold water. Cook and stir until thick. Add butter; mix well. Spoon over hot meat mixture. Bake casserole in moderate oven (375°) about 40 minutes. Makes 6 servings.Recipe categories: Main dish, Casseroles, Beef.
