  • sugar - 1 c
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • milk - 1 c
  • flour
  • cornstarch
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • vinegar - 1 tsp
  • unsweetened cocoa - 2 tsp
  • margarine - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 4 oz
  • Crisco shortening - 1 c

How to make red velvet cake:

Icing:5 Tbsp. cornstarch1 c. milk1/2 c. Crisco shortening1/2 c. margarine Cake: Cream the shortening, sugar and eggs until fluffy. Make a paste of the cocoa, vinegar and soda, then fold into sugar mixture. Add alternately the milk and flour. Stir in vanilla and food coloring. Grease three 8 or 9-inch cake pans. Distribute batter evenly. Bake in a moderate oven at 350° for 30 minutes or when toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes. Continue cooling on racks.

Icing: Place cornstarch and milk in saucepan. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and collects into a ball. Remove from heat and cool. Add Crisco and margarine. Cream with electric beater until mixture is smooth and creamy. Apply icing between two cake layers. Ice the top layer and sides.
