Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1/2 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • water
  • vinegar - 1 c
  • oleo - 1 Tbsp
  • cloves - 2 item
  • bay leaf - 1 item
  • peppercorns - 6 item
  • whole allspice - 2 item
  • large apples - 2 item
  • medium sweet onion - 1 item
  • medium head red cabbage - 1 item

How to make red cabbage:

Wash and remove outer leaves of cabbage. Remove core and slice. Peel and slice onion. Peel and core apples. Toss together. Add rest of ingredients to mixture. Simmer in oleo 1 1/2 hours, covered. Thicken slightly with small amount of cornstarch by using some of the juice to mix with cornstarch. Make paste and add gradually to cabbage while stirring. Serves 4 to 6.
