Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1 tsp
  • flour - 1/2 c
  • shortening - 2 Tbsp
  • hot water - 6 c
  • pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • diced onion - 1/2 c
  • bay leaf - 1 item
  • sliced celery - 1 c
  • beef bouillon cubes - 2 item
  • green pepper, cut into strips - 1 item
  • beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces - 2 lb
  • carrots, cut into 1-inch slices - 4 item
  • pared medium potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes - 3 item

How to make old fashioned beef stew:

Mix flour, 1 teaspoon salt and pepper. Coat meat with flour mixture. Melt shortening in large skillet; brown meat thoroughly. Add water; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 2 hours. Stir in remaining ingredients. Simmer 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender. If desired, thicken stew. Mix 1 cup cold water and 2 to 4 tablespoons flour, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Makes 6 servings.
