Moravian sugar cake
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 3/4 c
- salt - 1 Tbsp
- flour - 3 c
- eggs, beaten - 2 item
- mashed potatoes - 1 c
- dry yeast - 1 pkg
- lukewarm water - 1/4 c
- scalded milk - 1 c
- potato water - 1 c
- shortening, melted and cooled - 3/4 c
- brown sugar, sugar and cinnamon - 1 item
How to make moravian sugar cake:
Combine first 4 ingredients. Cool to lukewarm and add next 4 ingredients. Let rise in warm place about 1 hour. Then add the rest of the ingredients (except last one). Let rise 4 to 5 hours; put in greased pans, filling 1/2-inch thick. Let rise again 1 hour until double in bulk. Before baking, add topping to each cake. Dot with butter or margarine. Push in small amounts with finger 1 inch apart over entire cake. Sprinkle with brown sugar (1/2 cup per cake) and then sprinkle with mixture of granulated sugar and cinnamon sparingly.
