Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 2 Tbsp
  • milk - 3/4 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • baking powder - 2 tsp
  • baking soda - 1/2 tsp
  • all-purpose flour - 1/2 c
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • yellow cornmeal - 2 c
  • cream-style corn - 3/4 c
  • confectioners sugar optional - 1 item
  • cooking oil for frying - 1 item

How to make hush puppies:

In a bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Add egg, milk and corn. Stir just until mixed. In a deep fat fryer, heat oil to 375°. Drop batter by teaspoonfuls into oil. Fry until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly and roll in confectioners sugar if desired. Serve immediately with fried chicken, ham or sausage. Yields 12 to 15 servings.
