  • sugar - 1 Tbsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • flour - 1/2 c
  • soda - 1/2 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • baking powder - 1 Tbsp
  • shortening - 1/4 c
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • cornmeal yellow - 1 c

How to make crusty cornbread:

Combine first 6 ingredients; mix well. Place shortening in cast-iron skillet. Heat at 425° for 5 minutes. Remove from oven; pour hot shortening into batter. Mix well. Quickly pour batter into hot skillet. Bake at 425° for 25 minutes or until golden brown.
