  • sugar - 2 c
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla
  • salt - 1/4 tsp
  • flour - 2 c
  • butter - 1 c
  • water - 1 c
  • buttermilk - 1/2 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • unsweetened cocoa powder - 1/3 c
  • sifted powdered sugar
  • coarsely chopped pecans optional - 3/4 c

How to make buttermilk brownies:

Heat oven to 350°. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. Set aside. In a medium saucepan, combine the 1 cup butter, water and 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder. Bring mixture just to boiling, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Add the chocolate mixture to dry ingredients and beat with electric mixer on medium to high speed until thoroughly combined. Add eggs, the 1/2 cup buttermilk and the 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla. Beat for 1 minute (batter will be thin). Pour the batter into a greased and floured 15 x 10 x 1-inch baking pan. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

Meanwhile, for frosting in a medium saucepan, combine the 1/4 cup butter, 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder and 3 tablespoons buttermilk. Bring to boiling. Remove from heat. Add powdered sugar and the 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Beat until smooth. Stir in the chopped pecans, if desired. Pour warm frosting over the warm brownies, spreading evenly. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Cut into bars. Makes 36 bars.
