Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1 c
- cinnamon - 3/4 tsp
- milk - 1/4 c
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- chopped nuts - 1/2 c
- water - 1/2 c
- soda
- baking powder - 1/4 tsp
- egg - 1 item
- raisins - 1 c
- sifted all-purpose flour
- allspice - 1/2 tsp
- ground cloves - 1/2 tsp
- about 1 lb
- can applesauce 1 3/4 c - 1 lb
- shortening, slightly soft - 1/2 c
- Start oven preheating 350°
How to make applesauce bars:
Grease and flour jelly roll pan (10 x 15-inch). Start oven preheating (350°). Sift flour once; measure and sift with next 7 ingredients into mixing bowl. Add shortening, water, nuts and raisins all at once. Beat with spoon 2 minutes. Add applesauce and unbeaten egg. Beat another 2 minutes. Pour into prepared pan. Bake about 30 minutes or until wooden pick stuck in center comes out clean. Frost with Caramel Frosting. Cut into bars. Makes 48 bars.Caramel Frosting:1/2 c. (1 stick) butter or margarine1 c. sugar1/4 c. milk about 3 1/4 c. (about 1 lb. pkg.) sifted confectioners sugar or enough to make good spreading consistency In medium saucepan, melt butter or margarine; add sugar. Boil and stir 1 minute or until slightly thick.
