  • red food coloring - 1/4 c
  • cocoa - 3 Tbsp
  • Crisco - 1 c
  • sugar
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • sifted cake flour
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • Cream the Crisco, sugar and vanilla
  • powdered sugar - 3/4 c
  • flour - 3 Tbsp
  • milk - 2/3 c

How to make red velvet cake:

Mix food coloring with cocoa; let set. Cream the Crisco, sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time. Beat hard. Add cocoa mixture and mix well. Alternate adding flour and salt with buttermilk. Add soda and beat. Add vinegar and beat hard. Bake in 2 (9-inch) layer pans at 350° for 30 minutes or until done.Icing:1 stick margarine8 Tbsp. Crisco1/2 c. sugar3/4 c. powdered sugar3 Tbsp. flour2/3 c. milk1 tsp. vanilla Mix margarine and Crisco until fluffy. Add sugar and powdered sugar. Beat until smooth, then add flour, milk and vanilla. Do not cook. Beat all together until hard.
