Old-fashioned vinegar rolls
Ingredients/Components
- milk - 3/4 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- water
- baking powder - 1 Tbsp
- shortening - 1/3 c
- cider vinegar - 3/4 c
- sugar, divided
- cinnamon, divided - 4 tsp
- sifted, enriched flour - 2 c
- butter/margarine, divided - 4 Tbsp
How to make old-fashioned vinegar rolls:
Combine vinegar, water, 1 cup of the sugar and 2 teaspoons of the cinnamon. Stir over low heat until sugar dissolves. Cook over medium heat for 20 minutes.Meanwhile, mix and sift flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening; stir in milk with fork until a soft dough forms. Roll out into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick. Combine remaining sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over surface of rectangle. Dot with 2 tablespoons butter. Roll up, starting at longer side. Cut crosswise into slices about 1 1/4-inches thick. Place, cut side up, close together in deep baking dish. Dot with remaining butter. Pour hot vinegar mixture over all. Bake at 375° for 30 to 40 minutes. Serve hot with heavy pour cream. Makes eight servings.
