Old-fashioned baked beans
Ingredients/Components
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- brown sugar - 2 Tbsp
- dark molasses - 2 Tbsp
- prepared mustard - 2 Tbsp
- medium onion, chopped - 1 item
- water, divided - 2 qt
- sliced bacon, cooked and crumbled - 1/2 lb
- dry Great Northern beans - 1 lb
How to make old-fashioned baked beans:
Place beans and 1 quart water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat. Cover and let stand for 1 hour. Drain and rinse. Return beans to saucepan. Add salt and remaining water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 1 to 1 1/4 hours or until the beans are tender. Drain, reserving 2 cups cooking liquid.In a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish, combine beans, onion, mustard, brown sugar, molasses, bacon and 1 cup of reserving cooking liquid. Cover and bake at 400° for 45 minutes or until the beans have reached desired thickness, stirring occasionally. Yield: 12 to 16 servings.
