  • low-fat buttermilk
  • egg, lightly beaten - 1 item
  • self-rising cornmeal
  • Crisco shortening or Crisco oil, divided - 2 Tbsp

How to make hoe cakes:

Combine cornmeal and baking soda in medium bowl. Add buttermilk, egg and one tablespoon melted shortening. Stir just until dry ingredients are moistened. Heat 1 tablespoon Crisco shortening or Crisco oil on medium-high heat in heavy large nonstick skillet. Pour 1/4 cup batter into skillet for each hoe cake.
