German chocolate pie
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 3/4 c
- vanilla - 3/4 tsp
- salt - 1/4 tsp
- flour - 1/3 c
- butter - 2 Tbsp
- eggs, separated - 3 item
- milk, scalded
- chopped nuts or coconut - 1 item
- baked 8-inch pie shell - 1 item
- German bittersweet chocolate - 2 oz
How to make german chocolate pie:
Melt chocolate and butter over low heat or in a double boiler. Mix flour, sugar and salt and stir into chocolate mixture. Slowly add milk, stirring constantly. Cook until mixture is fully thickened, about 15 minutes. Beat egg yolks well; stir in a little of the chocolate mixture, then pour egg into the hot chocolate mixture and cook about 2 minutes longer, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, cool partially, and stir in vanilla. Pour into pie shell.Beat egg whites until stiff, then slowly beat in the remaining 1/3 cup of sugar. Swirl meringue over pie filling and sprinkle with nuts or coconut. Brown in a moderate oven (350°) for about 15 minutes.
