  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • soda - 1/2 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • baking powder - 3 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • all-purpose flour
  • Crisco - 1/3 c
  • margarine - 2 Tbsp
  • lemon juice - 2 Tbsp
  • dried apples - 8 oz

How to make fried apple pies:

Buttermilk Pastry:3 c. all-purpose flour1/2 tsp. soda1/2 tsp. salt3 tsp. baking powder1/3 c. Crisco1 egg1 c. buttermilk Soak apples overnight. Drain and rinse. Cover apples with water and cook about 1 hour or until soft; drain. Add margarine, sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice. Combine flour, soda, salt and baking powder. Cut in Crisco. Combine egg and milk and add to flour mixture. Knead until smooth. Roll out pastry 1/3 at a time. Cut into 5-inch circles. Spoon apples onto 1/2 of pastry circle. To seal edge, moisten edge with water and use a fork to press together. Heat 1-inch of salad oil in iron skillet to 375°. Fry pies until golden brown on each side, turning once. Place on paper towel and sprinkle with powdered sugar. The pastry can also be used for pie crust or dumplings.
