Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1 Tbsp
- salt - 1 tsp
- water - 1/4 c
- baking powder - 2 tsp
- baking soda - 1/2 tsp
- all-purpose flour - 1/2 c
- buttermilk or sour milk - 1 c
- beaten egg - 1 item
- cornmeal
- finely chopped onion - 1/2 c
- shortening or cooking oil for deep fat frying - 1 item
How to make hush puppies:
In mixing bowl stir together egg, buttermilk, onion and water; set aside. In a large mixing bowl combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Add egg mixture to cornmeal mixture; stir just until moistened. Drop by tablespoons into deep hot fat (375°). Fry about 2 minutes or until golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels.
