  • sugar - 1 c
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • pkg - 1 oz
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • chopped nuts - 1 c
  • flour
  • butter - 1/2 c
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 2 Tbsp
  • eggs, beaten - 2 item
  • boiling water - 1 c
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • dates, chopped fine - 1 c

How to make chocolate chip torte:

Add together dates, boiling water and soda. Sift flour, cocoa and salt. Cream shortening and sugar; beat until fluffy. Add eggs alternately. Add flour and date mixture, blending well after each addition. Add vanilla. Spread in greased 13 x 9 1/2-inch pan. Sprinkle with nuts and chocolate chips on top of cake. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Cool.
