Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 3 c
  • vanilla - 1/2 tsp
  • butter
  • soda - 1/8 tsp
  • nuts - 2 c
  • whole milk - 1 c

How to make aunt bill's brown candy:

Combine 2 cups sugar and milk in saucepan and cook slowly. Put 1 cup sugar in heavy iron skillet and put over low heat. Begin stirring with wooden spoon and keep sugar moving so it won't scorch. Takes about 30 minutes to melt sugar. At not time, let smoke so it will darken. It should be about the color of light brown syrup. Begin pouring in pan of milk and sugar; keep very low heat. Stir constantly.

The real secret of mixing this is pour a very fine stream. Continue stirring and cooking until it forms a hard ball. Test in water. Add soda and butter; stir. Let cool. Add vanilla and beat. Pour in buttered dish. Makes 3 pounds of candy.
