  • cinnamon - 1 tsp
  • eggs - 2 item
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • chopped nuts - 1 c
  • flour - 3 c
  • brown sugar - 2 c
  • chopped dates - 2 c
  • baking soda - 2 tsp
  • shortening - 1 c
  • allspice - 1/2 tsp
  • ground clove - 1/2 tsp
  • beer or ale - 2 c

How to make beer cake:

Cream shortening and sugar. Stir in lightly beaten eggs, nuts, dates and spices. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, salt and soda; stir in beer (gently). Combine beer mixture with creamed mixture and stir until well blended. Bake in well-greased tube pan at 350° for 1 hour.

Can be served plain or with ice cream. Cake will keep a long time in a tight container in a cool place.
