Ingredients/Components
- butter - 1 Tbsp
- melted butter
- dry mustard - 1 tsp
- grated cheese - 1 to
- minced onion - 1 3
- sliced tomatoes - 1 2
- wheat germ or bread crumbs - 1 c
- nutritional yeast optional - 2 Tbsp
- macaroni, cooked whole wheat or soy
- thin white sauce
- to 2 eggs, beaten optional - 1 item
- dry milk powder optional - 1/2 c
- cubed ham or 1 c
How to make macaroni and cheese:
Sauce:1 1/2 c. thin white sauce1 1/2 to 2 c. grated cheese1 to 3 Tbsp. minced onion1 tsp. dry mustard1 to 2 eggs, beaten (optional)1/2 c. dry milk powder (optional)2 Tbsp. nutritional yeast (optional) Topping (Optional):1/4 c. melted butter1 c. wheat germ or bread crumbs Variation:2 c. cubed ham or 1 c. cooked bacon pieces1 to 2 c. sliced tomatoes Stir and heat sauce ingredients until thick. Gently stir in cooked macaroni. Pour into greased 2-quart casserole. Dot with butter. Cover and bake at 350° for 20 minutes. If desired, sprinkle with topping ingredients and bake, uncovered, 10 minutes longer.For a fancy dish, alternate layers of macaroni and sauce, ham or bacon and tomatoes. Sprinkle with topping. Bake.
