Date and nut bread
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1 c
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1/2 tsp
- salt - 1/2 tsp
- chopped nuts - 1/4 c
- baking soda
- boiling water - 3/4 c
- shortening - 1/4 c
- sifted all-purpose flour
- chopped dates not floured - 1 c
How to make date and nut bread:
Combine nuts, dates, soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Add shortening and boiling water. Allow this mixture to stand for 15 minutes. Stir to blend. Beat the eggs slightly, add vanilla. Stir in the sugar and the sifted flour. Add to date mixture. Do not overmix. Place in a greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan. Bake 1 hour in 350° oven (moderate). When done, toothpick in the center should come out clean. Cool before removing. Loosen sides with spatula.
