vanilla - 1 tsp
butter or margarine - 1/2 c
salt - 1/2 tsp
flour - 2 c
brown sugar - 1/2 c
soda - 2 tsp
egg - 1 item
shortening - 1/2 c
cream of tartar - 2 tsp
white sugar - 1 c

How to make cracked sugar cookies:

Cream first 6 ingredients. Sift next 4 ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Roll into small 1-inch balls, then roll in granulated sugar (red and green sugar for Christmas). Do not flatten. Place on cookie sheet and bake 6 to 8 minutes in a 350° or 375° oven.
