  • carrots, sliced - 2 item
  • can kidney beans - 1 item
  • frozen lima beans - 1 pkg
  • ham hocks - 1 1
  • Portuguese sausage - 1 pkg
  • potatoes, cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes - 3 item
  • fresh string beans, cut into 1-inch sections - 1 pkg
  • bunch watercress, cut into 3-inch sections optional - 1 item

How to make bean soup:

Boil ham hocks in water in a large (10-quart or larger) pot until meat falls off the bone (about 3 to 4 hours). Add remaining ingredients except watercress and cook for an additional hour. Watercress and/or sliced cabbage can be added the last 15 to 20 minutes of cooking time.
