How to make vanilla sugar:

Split bean lengthwise and bury in sugar. Store this in a glass container and use in coffee, on cereal, or in baking. The longer the mixture sits, the stronger the sugar will taste of vanilla.

In cake baking, you can incorporate the seeds by slicing a bean lengthwise and scraping out the seeds and then creaming them with the fat called for in the recipe.
