Ingredients/Components

  • 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, softened - 12 Tbsp
  • granulated sugar - 3/4 c
  • large egg yolk - 1 item
  • vanilla extract - 1 tsp
  • flour
  • unsweetened cocoa powder plus 2 Tbsp - 1/3 c
  • salt - 1/2 tsp
  • confectioners sugar - 2 c
  • milk - 1/4 c
  • red food coloring optional - 1 item

How to make valentine's day cookies:

Preheat oven to 350°. Using an electric mixer, beat butter until fluffy. Scrape bowl as needed. Add granulated sugar and beat until combined. Beat in egg yolk, vanilla and then flour, 1/3 cup cocoa powder and salt. Scrape dough onto a piece of waxed paper; pat into a disc and cover with another piece of waxed paper. Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick. Using a 2 1/2-inch heart-shaped cutter, cut out cookies; place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake until tops are firm and cookies are set around the edges, about 15 minutes. Let cool 5 minutes, then transfer the cookies to racks to cool completely.

Icing for Valentine's Day Cookies: Put 2/3 cup confectioners sugar into each of three small bowls. Stir 4 teaspoons of milk into one of the bowls. Stir 2 tablespoons cocoa and 4 teaspoons of milk into another. Stir remaining 4 teaspoons of milk into last bowl and tint with food coloring. Spread a little icing over each cookie. Let harden for 20 minutes. Makes 24 cookies, each 157 calories, 6 grams fat, 1/4 grams protein, 24.5 grams carbohydrates and 0.4 gram fiber.
