Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1 c
- salt - 3/4 tsp
- brown sugar - 1 c
- butter - 5 Tbsp
- water - 1 c
- baking powder
- egg - 1 item
- shortening - 1/2 c
- sifted flour - 2 c
- flavoring - 1/2 tsp
- drained pineapple slices or other fruit - 1 item
How to make upside-down cake:
Mix shortening, sugar, egg, water, sifted flour, baking powder, salt and flavoring as any cake batter. Melt in heavy skillet: brown sugar and butter. Arrange pineapple slices or other fruit in melted mixture. Cover with batter. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or longer. When done, let stand 10 minutes, then turn out on baking sheet covered with waxed paper. (If peaches are used, add 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves.
