Ingredients/Components

  • salt - 1 tsp
  • water
  • olive or vegetable oil - 2 Tbsp
  • pepper - 1/8 tsp
  • Worcestershire sauce - 2 tsp
  • chopped onion - 1 item
  • chili powder - 1 tsp
  • can chicken broth - 1 1/2
  • tomato sauce - 3/4 c
  • ground cumin - 1 tsp
  • cloves minced garlic - 3 item
  • shredded Monterey Jack cheese - 1/4 c
  • steak sauce - 1 Tbsp
  • can beef consomme - 1 1/2
  • peeled, chopped tomatoes - 1 c
  • can drained, chopped green chiles - 1 oz
  • green and 1/2 red pepper, chopped - 1/2 item
  • handfuls corn tortilla chips - 3 item

How to make tortilla soup:

Saute onion, chiles, garlic and peppers in oil until soft. Add tomatoes, consomme, broth, water, tomato sauce, chili powder, salt, pepper, Worcestershire and steak sauce. Bring soup to a boil, lower heat to simmer and cook, covered, for 1 hour. Add tortillas and cheese and simmer 10 minutes more.

If desired, drop in 1 chopped avocado the last 3 minutes. Can add 1 grilled chicken breast per serving, if more substantial meat is desired.
