Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 2 tsp
  • salt
  • water - 1/2 c
  • oil - 1/4 c
  • pepper - 1/4 tsp
  • chopped celery - 1/2 c
  • cloves garlic, minced - 2 item
  • ground beef - 2 lb
  • basil - 1 tsp
  • chopped parsley - 1/4 c
  • bay leaves - 2 item
  • medium onions, chopped - 2 item
  • 2 cans tomatoes

How to make tomato sauce:

Heat oil in a large kettle or Dutch oven. Add onions and garlic; saute 5 minutes. Add the ground beef; cook until brown, breaking the meat up with a fork until it cooks. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cook over low heat until it is thick and rich, 45 minutes to an hour. Remove the bay leaves; skim off the fat. This makes about 10 cups, plenty for 2 hearty family dishes. It freezes well.
