  • sugar - 2 c
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • milk - 1/4 c
  • butter or margarine - 1/2 c
  • flour - 2 c
  • buttermilk - 1/2 c
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • powdered sugar
  • dark cocoa - 1/4 c
  • strong coffee or water - 1 c

How to make texas brownies:

Frosting:1/2 c. butter or margarine2 Tbsp. dark cocoa1/4 c. milk3 1/2 c. powdered sugar1 tsp. vanilla In a large bowl, combine flour and sugar. In saucepan, combine butter, shortening, coffee or water and unsweetened cocoa. Stir and heat to boiling.

Pour boiling mixture over flour and sugar. Add the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla. Mix well on high speed of mixer. Pour into well buttered 17 1/2 x 11-inch jelly roll pan. Bake in a 400° oven for 20 minutes or until brownies test done in center.

While brownies bake, prepare frosting. In a saucepan, combine butter, cocoa and milk. Heat to boiling, stirring. Mix in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Pour warm frosting over brownies as soon as you take them out of the oven. Cool. Cut into 48 bars.

Tip: May substitute 2 teaspoons of vinegar or lemon juice mixed into 1/2 cup milk for buttermilk. Great for a crowd.
