Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 1 c
  • water - 1 item
  • oil - 3 Tbsp
  • ground ginger - 1/2 tsp
  • soy sauce
  • sesame oil - 1 Tbsp
  • white vinegar - 1 c
  • cornstarch to thicken - 1 item
  • Heinz catsup - 2/3 c
  • sake or sherry - 3 Tbsp
  • chicken, boned and cut into 1-inch cubes - 1 item
  • or 2-inch long slices - 1/2 large

How to make sweet and sour chicken:

Marinade:2 Tbsp. soy sauce3 Tbsp. sake or sherry1 Tbsp. sesame oil1/2 tsp. ground ginger2 Tbsp. water Mix marinade ingredients and marinate chicken for 30 minutes. Drain and reserve marinade. In a Dutch oven, heat oil and saute chicken until almost done. Add bell pepper and cook quickly until chicken is done and bell pepper is firm. Add remaining marinade juices at this time.

Meanwhile, either have the sweet and sour sauce ready or take out chicken and make sauce at this time. To make sauce, heat to a boil sugar, vinegar and catsup. Mix enough cornstarch and water and add to the rest to make thick sauce. When it is the right thickness, add to the chicken and bell peppers. Let stand at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve over homemade bread or rice.

Variation: Use pork instead of chicken.
