Fruit Filling:1/4 c. sugar1 tsp. cinnamon1/2 c. chopped nuts1/2 c. candied fruits or raisins Combine ingredients for fruit filling.

Soften yeast in warm water. Combine milk, shortening, sugar and salt; cool to lukewarm. Add 1 cup of the flour and beat well. Add softened yeast, egg and vanilla. Mix in enough flour to make soft dough. Knead on floured surface until smooth and elastic (8 to 10 minutes). Place in greased bowl; turn once to grease surface. Cover and let rise in warm place until double (1 1/2 to 2 hours). Roll dough to 13 x 9-inch rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick. Brush with melted butter. Spread evenly with Fruit Filling. Roll lengthwise; seal edge. Shape in a ring on greased cookie sheet. With scissors, snip almost to center at 1-inch intervals. Pull sections apart and twist a bit, standing every other one up slightly. Let rise until double (35 to 45 minutes). Bake in moderate oven (375°) about 20 minutes. While warm, drizzle with confectioners sugar icing and trim with candied cherries.
