Ingredients/Components

  • sugar - 3 Tbsp
  • salt
  • flour - 6 7
  • water - 1/2 c
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • egg, beaten - 1 item
  • dry yeast - 1 pkg
  • milk or water - 1 c
  • sourdough starter - 1 c

How to make sourdough bread:

Mix first 3 ingredients. Let set 10 minutes. Combine all ingredients and knead on floured board for 10 minutes. Place in large bowl. Grease top of dough and cover. Place in warm place and let rise to double its size. Punch down and let rise again. Turn out on floured board and divide in 3 parts. Place in greased loaf pans and let rise double in size. Bake in preheated oven at 375° for first 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 325° and bake about 30 minutes longer. Turn out on rack to cool. Brush tops with butter. Let completely cool before wrapping.

Note: For sourdough wheat bread, use recipe but use 4 cups wheat flour, 2 cups white flour and 2 packages yeast.
