Ingredients/Components

  • vanilla - 1 Tbsp
  • milk - 2 Tbsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips - 1 c
  • baking soda - 3/4 tsp
  • egg - 1 item
  • all-purpose flour
  • nuts optional - 1 c
  • firmly packed light brown sugar
  • butter flavored shortening or regular shortening - 3/4 c

How to make soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies:

Note: Add 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips if nuts are omitted.

Heat oven to 375°. Combine shortening, brown sugar, milk and vanilla in a large bowl. Beat at medium speed of electric mixer until creamy. Beat egg into creamed mixture.

Combine flour, salt and baking soda and mix into creamed mixture until just blended. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.

Drop by rounded tablespoonful of dough 3 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes for chewy cookies (cookies will appear moist). Cool 2 minutes. Remove to cooling rack. Yields 3 dozen.
