Ingredients/Components

  • Instant mashed potatoes for 6 people
  • egg - 1 item
  • ground beef - 1 lb
  • onion chopped - 1 item
  • frozen sliced carrots thawed - 2/3 c
  • all purpose flour - 2 Tbsp
  • shredded cheddar cheese - 1/2 c
  • salt, divided - 2 tsp
  • beef broth - 1 c
  • pepper, divided - 1/2 tsp

How to make shepard's pie:

Cook potatoes according to directions. Cook beef and onion in large skillet over med-high heat stirring until it crumbles and loses its pink color. Drain, then return to pan. Add carrots (peas or corn can be substituted). Stir in flour, 1 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Add broth and cook, stirring until slightly thickened. Spoon into 11x17 inch lightly greased dish. Stir egg into potatoes along with remaining 1 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Spoon over beef mixture. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes. Sprinkle with cheese and bake 5 minutes more.
