Sawdust salad
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 1/2 c
- pkg - 1 oz
- egg, slightly beaten - 1 item
- cold water - 2 c
- boiling water
- margarine - 5 tsp
- miniature marshmallows - 1 item
- juice of 1 lemon
- pint heavy cream, whipped - 1/2 item
- 2 can crushed pineapple, drained and reserved
- or 3 diced bananas - 2 item
- Add cold water, lemon juice, crushed pineapple and bananas
- reserved liquid from pineapple - 1 c
How to make sawdust salad:
Dissolve Jell-O in boiling water. Add cold water, lemon juice, crushed pineapple and bananas. Pour into 13 x 9 x 2 baking dish and cover with a layer of miniature marshmallows. Put in refrigerator to set, but add topping before salad congeals.Topping:2 Tbsp. flour1/2 c. sugar1 egg, slightly beaten1 c. reserved liquid from pineapple5 tsp. margarine1/2 pint heavy cream, whipped Cook flour, sugar, egg and reserved liquid from pineapple over low heat until thickness of custard. Remove from heat; add margarine. Stir to melt and let cool. Fold in cream. Spread carefully over top of salad.
