Sawdust salad

sugar - 1/2 c
pkg - 1 oz
egg, slightly beaten - 1 item
cold water - 2 c
boiling water
margarine - 5 tsp
miniature marshmallows - 1 item
juice of 1 lemon
pint heavy cream, whipped - 1/2 item
2 can crushed pineapple, drained and reserved
or 3 diced bananas - 2 item
Add cold water, lemon juice, crushed pineapple and bananas
reserved liquid from pineapple - 1 c

How to make sawdust salad:

Dissolve Jell-O in boiling water. Add cold water, lemon juice, crushed pineapple and bananas. Pour into 13 x 9 x 2 baking dish and cover with a layer of miniature marshmallows. Put in refrigerator to set, but add topping before salad congeals.Topping:2 Tbsp. flour1/2 c. sugar1 egg, slightly beaten1 c. reserved liquid from pineapple5 tsp. margarine1/2 pint heavy cream, whipped Cook flour, sugar, egg and reserved liquid from pineapple over low heat until thickness of custard. Remove from heat; add margarine. Stir to melt and let cool. Fold in cream. Spread carefully over top of salad. Let congeal in refrigerator at least 6 hours or overnight.
