Russian dill pickles
Ingredients/Components
- sugar - 3 c
- salt - 6 Tbsp
- water - 3 c
- alum - 1 item
- dill - 1 item
- small onion - 1 item
- garlic - 1 item
- cucumbers - 1 item
- dark vinegar - 3 c
How to make russian dill pickles:
Bring sugar, water, vinegar and salt to a boil and cool. Slice cucumbers lengthwise. Pack in jars with dill, garlic, small onion and pinch of alum. Pour cooled brine over pickles; seal loosely.Heat in oven on cookie sheet 15 minutes at 300°. Reduce heat to 250° for 30 minutes or until color changes. Remove from oven. Tighten rings. One and a half batches of brine is enough for 5 quarts of pickles.
