  • sugar - 3 c
  • salt - 6 Tbsp
  • water - 3 c
  • alum - 1 item
  • dill - 1 item
  • small onion - 1 item
  • garlic - 1 item
  • cucumbers - 1 item
  • dark vinegar - 3 c

How to make russian dill pickles:

Bring sugar, water, vinegar and salt to a boil and cool. Slice cucumbers lengthwise. Pack in jars with dill, garlic, small onion and pinch of alum. Pour cooled brine over pickles; seal loosely.

Heat in oven on cookie sheet 15 minutes at 300°. Reduce heat to 250° for 30 minutes or until color changes. Remove from oven. Tighten rings. One and a half batches of brine is enough for 5 quarts of pickles.
