Soften yeast in lukewarm water. Pour hot water over sugar, salt and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Add 1/2 cup flour and mix thoroughly. Stir in softened yeast half of remaining flour and egg; beat. Add enough flour to form a soft dough. Turn out on lightly floured board and let rest 5 to 10 minutes. Knead until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise until double in bulk. Punch down and grease top. Cover with dampened towel and refrigerate.

When ready to bake, shape into rolls. Place in well-greased pan. Let rise until doubled in bulk. Bake in hot oven (425°) for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 2 dozen rolls.
