Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 Tbsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- baking soda
- vinegar - 1 Tbsp
- shortening - 1/2 c
- sifted cake flour
- red food coloring - 2 oz
- Add eggs and beat well
- butter * - 1 c
How to make red velvet cake:
Thoroughly cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and beat well. Make a paste of cocoa and red food coloring. Add to creamed mixture. Mix salt, vanilla and buttermilk together. Add cake flour alternately with buttermilk mixture to creamed mixture. Mix baking soda and vinegar together, then fold into batter. Do not beat or stir. Bake in 2 greased 9-inch layer pans at 350° for 30 minutes.Icing for Red Velvet Cake:5 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 c. sugar1 c. butter *1 tsp. vanilla Cook flour and milk in saucepan over low heat until thick, stirring constantly. Cool thoroughly. Cream together sugar, butter and vanilla in mixing bowl. Add cooled flour mixture and beat with mixer until it's of spreading consistency. The longer you beat it, the fluffier it gets.Note: One cup white shortening or 1/2 cup white shortening and 1/2 cup butter can be substituted for 1 cup butter.
*I use 1/2 whipped butter and 1/2 shortening.
