  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 tsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • all-purpose flour
  • powdered sugar - 1 c
  • butter flavoring - 1 tsp
  • red food coloring - 1/4 c
  • butter or shortening - 1 c
  • Make a paste with coloring and cocoa; add to cream mixture

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste with coloring and cocoa; add to cream mixture. Add salt and flour with buttermilk and vanilla. Alternately add soda and vinegar. Add butter flavoring. Blend. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.Frosting:3 Tbsp. flour1 c. butter or shortening1 tsp. vanilla1 c. milk1 c. powdered sugar Mix flour and milk. Heat on medium until thick. Set aside to cool. Beat Crisco (butter), vanilla and sugar together. Add to cooled flour mixture. Spread on cake.
