- vanilla - 1 tsp
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 Tbsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- vinegar - 1 tsp
- shortening - 1/2 c
- all-purpose flour
- powdered sugar - 1 c
- butter flavoring - 1 tsp
- red food coloring - 1/4 c
- butter or shortening - 1 c
- Make a paste with coloring and cocoa; add to cream mixture
How to make red velvet cake:
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste with coloring and cocoa; add to cream mixture. Add salt and flour with buttermilk and vanilla. Alternately add soda and vinegar. Add butter flavoring. Blend. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.Frosting:3 Tbsp. flour1 c. butter or shortening1 tsp. vanilla1 c. milk1 c. powdered sugar Mix flour and milk. Heat on medium until thick. Set aside to cool.
