Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1 tsp
- flour
- butter - 1 c
- soda - 1 tsp
- cocoa - 2 tsp
- buttermilk - 1 c
- vinegar
- shortening - 1/2 c
- red food coloring - 2 oz
- Make a paste with cocoa and food coloring
How to make red velvet cake:
Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste with cocoa and food coloring. Add to creamed mixture. Mix salt, butter and vanilla with buttermilk and add alternately with flour to creamed mixture. Combine vinegar and soda and fold into batter. Do not beat. Bake in layer pans at 350° for 30 minutes. Grease pans.Frosting:5 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 c. sugar1 tsp. vanilla1 c. butter Stir flour and milk over heat until thick. Cool; cream sugar, vanilla and butter.
