Ingredients/Components
- sugar
- eggs - 2 item
- vanilla - 1 tsp
- milk - 1 c
- salt - 1/4 tsp
- butter - 1 c
- cocoa - 2 4
- buttermilk - 1 c
- baking soda - 1 tsp
- vinegar - 1 tsp
- shortening - 1/2 c
- red food coloring - 2 oz
- cake flour, sifted
- Add one egg at a time; beat well
How to make red velvet cake:
Cream sugar, shortening and vanilla. Add one egg at a time; beat well. Make paste of food coloring and cocoa. Add to sugar mixture. Sift flour and salt. Add flour and buttermilk alternately, a little at a time, mixing well after each addition. Begin and end with flour. Combine vinegar and soda; add to batter. Pour into 2 (8-inch) pans. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until cakes tests done. Let cool and split layers.Icing:3 to 5 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 c. sugar1 c. butter1 tsp. vanilla Cook flour and milk until thick; let cool.
