  • sugar
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • chopped pecans - 1 item
  • milk - 1 c
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 2 tsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • eggs, beaten - 2 item
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 2 oz
  • sticks butter - 2 item
  • cake flour, sifted then measured
  • Add eggs, salt, buttermilk and flour

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs, salt, buttermilk and flour. Make paste of red food coloring, cocoa and vanilla; stir into batter. Mix soda and vinegar; stir in batter but do not beat. Pour into 3 greased layer pans. Bake at 350° for 35 minutes.Icing:3 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 c. sugar2 sticks butter1 tsp. vanilla chopped pecans Cook flour and milk until thick; cool. Beat sugar, butter and vanilla until fluffy. Beat in milk and flour mixture. Spread in between layers, on sides and top of cake. Sprinkle with finely chopped nuts.
