  • sugar
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • chopped nuts - 1 c
  • butter - 1/2 c
  • cornstarch - 5 Tbsp
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 3 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • sifted flour
  • Crisco - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 2 oz
  • Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream Crisco, sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Make a paste of food coloring and cocoa. Add to mixture. Add flour, salt, milk and vanilla, gradually. Mix well. Mix vinegar and soda in a small bowl. Add to other ingredients by hand. Bake in 3 (8-inch) pans at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.Red Velvet Cake Frosting:1 c. milk5 Tbsp. cornstarch1 c. sugar1/2 c. Crisco1/2 c. butter1 Tbsp. vanilla1 c. chopped nuts Mix and cook over low heat, milk and cornstarch, until smooth and very thick. (It will be a little lumpy.) Beat with mixer until smooth. Cool slightly. Mix sugar, Crisco and butter. Beat on high speed for 10 minutes. Beat in cooled mixture until stiff. Add vanilla and nuts.
