  • soda - 1 Tbsp
  • cocoa - 2 Tbsp
  • confectioners sugar - 1 c
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 1 oz
  • Make a paste with coloring and cocoa

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste with coloring and cocoa. Add vinegar and milk. Sift salt, flour and soda. Add to mixture by blending (do not beat). After flour is added, add vanilla. Grease two 9-inch pans. Bake 30 minutes in 350° oven. Cool and split layers, using thread.Frosting:5 Tbsp. flour1 c. milk1 c. confectioners sugar1 tsp. vanilla1 c. butter Cook flour and milk until thick; let cool. Cream butter, sugar and vanilla. Add paste and beat.
