  • Crisco - 1/2 c
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • eggs - 2 item
  • red food coloring - 1 oz
  • water - 1 oz
  • cocoa - 2 tsp
  • salt - 1 tsp
  • sifted plain flour - 2 c
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • vinegar - 1 tsp
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • Add eggs, food coloring, water and vanilla
  • flour - 1/4 c
  • pinch of salt - 1 item
  • white sugar - 1 c
  • stick margarine - 1 item

How to make red velvet cake:

Cream the sugar and shortening. Add eggs, food coloring, water and vanilla. Add sifted flour, salt and cocoa together alternately with buttermilk. Beat about 10 minutes. Fold in thoroughly the soda, dissolved in vinegar. Do not beat. Bake 30 to 40 minutes at 350°.Icing:1 c. milk1/4 c. flour pinch of salt1 c. white sugar1/2 c. Crisco1 stick margarine1 tsp. vanilla Cook the milk, flour and pinch of salt until thick. Let cool. After cooling, mix with the sugar, Crisco and margarine. Beat at high speed until fluffy. Add the vanilla. Beat at high speed. Spread on cake. Garnish with coconut.
