  • sugar
  • eggs - 2 item
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • milk - 1/2 c
  • salt - 1/4 tsp
  • flour
  • butter - 1/4 c
  • cocoa - 3 Tbsp
  • baking soda - 1 tsp
  • pinch of salt - 1 item
  • vinegar - 1 Tbsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • red food coloring - 2 oz
  • buttermilk* - 1 c
  • Then cream shortening, sugar, eggs and color paste

How to make red velvet cake:

To Make Cake: Mix red food coloring and cocoa to make a paste. Then cream shortening, sugar, eggs and color paste. Beat well. Add buttermilk, flour, salt and vanilla. Beat well. Add vinegar and baking soda. Mix by hand. Pour into a greased pan and bake at 350° for 35 minutes.

*One cup milk and 1 teaspoon of vinegar can be used in place of buttermilk.Frosting:2 Tbsp. flour1/2 c. milk1/2 c. sugar pinch of salt1/4 c. butter1/4 c. shortening1 tsp. vanilla Mix flour and milk. Cook until thickened. In a separate bowl cream sugar, salt, butter, shortening and vanilla. Mix well. Add slightly cooled flour mixture and beat until fluffy. Can be tinted with food coloring. Spread on cake.
