Ingredients/Components

  • sugar
  • vanilla - 1 tsp
  • milk - 1 c
  • salt - 3/4 tsp
  • flour
  • soda - 1 tsp
  • cocoa - 3 Tbsp
  • buttermilk - 1 c
  • eggs, beaten - 2 item
  • vinegar - 1 tsp
  • shortening - 1/2 c
  • butter or oleo - 1 c
  • red food color - 2 oz
  • Cream shortening and sugar

How to make red velvet cake:

Make paste of cocoa and food coloring. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Combine sifted flour with salt. Add alternately with butter and milk. Add vanilla to creamed mixture. Add cocoa paste. Fold in vinegar and soda. Pour batter in equal parts into 3 cake pans, greased, then with wax paper. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes.Icing:3 tsp. sifted flour1 c. milk1 c. butter or oleo1 c. sugar1 tsp. vanilla Bring butter to room temperature. Add sugar and cream together. Beat until light and fluffy. If using a mixer, beat 15 or 20 minutes. Add vanilla. Combine the two mixtures thoroughly. Spread rather thin between layers. Use remaining icing to frost the sides of cake.
